The advantage of waking at 4am

by VM Brasseur on September 30th, 2007

Today I woke up at 4am and despite my best attempts could not go back to sleep. I got up before 6am. Since then I’ve…

  • Gone to the gym
  • Made breakfast
  • Baked brownies
  • Done all my dishes from the past week
  • Washed three loads of laundry
  • Gone out for coffee…twice
  • Posted a package at the USPS
  • Walked to the downtown hardware store and back three times
  • Driven to and browsed two other hardware stores in town
  • Labeled all the breakers in the circuit box
  • Replaced the light socket in the main lighting fixture in the kitchen
  • Walked 16,605 steps, according to the trusty pedometer.

And it’s only quarter of two. I ought to run to Trader Joe’s, fill the tank in the car, fold and put away the laundry and get some office work done before taking a shower and heading in to San Francisco to meet the Albertellis at 5:30 for dinner and a They Might Be Giants concert, but I doubt I’ll actually do more than TJs, fill-up and shower in that time. Let’s hope I can stay awake long enough to enjoy the show tonight.

  1. Sounds like several of your activites cancel each other out, so you could have slept later after all.

“Baked brownies” cancels out “Gone to the gym.”

“Made breakfast” cancels out “Done all my dishes from the past week.”

And of course “and back” cancels out “Walked to the downtown hardware store.”

  2. Typically “brownies” would not have canceled out “gym” as I bake ’em but am not very tempted to partake. Today was the exception to the rule, alas, and you are correct in this assessment.

The breakfast in question was a soup of gingered-stock, onions and a poached egg so the impact on the dirty dishes was minimal (and proceeded the washing of said). Net gain for me.

The “and back” doesn’t really cancel out as each trip accomplished exactly what it was intended (e.g.: gather materials and knowledge). Yes, it took many trips but they were fruitful. Plus they help contribute to the activity which can help balance out the aforementioned brownies.

Besides, had sleeping later been an option at all then it’s one I would have taken gladly. I didn’t exactly choose to wake up at 4am and stay that way.
