I think I over did it

by VM Brasseur on August 17th, 2008

Sundays have become my day to clean up from the week behind and prep for the week ahead. That usually involves doing a lot of cooking so I won’t have to worry about fitting that task into my schedule on work days.

Yesterday I decided that I wanted to make Indian food today. It’s my favorite food type right now and I felt like having enough to tide me over for the week.

Um, yeah. Meeting that goal wasn’t a problem. Eating all the food I made? That might be an issue. Normally when I make Indian food I make one or two dishes, max. Today I made a grand total of five:

  • Sour chickpeas
  • Lentils with spinach and cilantro
  • Split mung bean dal
  • Curried cabbage and tomatoes
  • Kheer (Indian rice pudding)

I’m not entirely sure what prompted me to go so far overboard. It took about 4.5 hours (some unattended), every burner on my stove was occupied by a pot of some variety and I managed to run out of lemons, cilantro, black mustard seed and curry powder during the course of cooking. I successfully overshot the goal of having food for lunch this week and will now have food for lunch and dinner (hell, if I felt like it even for breakfast) for the duration of the week but the time might have saved in cooking during week I’m about to lose in doing all of the dishes this spree generated.

I shouldn’t complain. Thankfully everything turned out really well (though the chickpeas are a little too sour and the kheer a little too sweet) so I won’t mind eating this all week. And, really, a few dirty dishes ain’t gonna kill me.

  1. When I finally stowed all the leftovers into single-serving containers the number of servings sitting there was intimidating (the pile was so impressive I almost took a photo). Over half of them ended up going into the freezer so I wouldn’t risk wasting it.

And now that the dishes are done (in record time) I feel the need to collapse on the couch for a while.

So I hear you need lemons?

  3. Curiously enough, yes. Why, do you know where a gal can get a few lemons on the cheap?
