Not being insane enough to make my own puff pastry I went out and bought some. There were two kinds available: the $6.00 Pepperidge Farms and the almost $10 artisinal sort they sell in Whole Foods. I went for the Pepperidge Farms.
While using the stuff I got curious about the ingredients. Fishing the box out of recycling I found this:
By definition puff pastry contains butter. LOTS AND LOTS of butter. Do you see “butter” anywhere in that list above? No, neither do I. The dish I’d planned to make with the puff pastry didn’t work out the first time so I had to run out to Whole Foods (the closest grocery store I knew would be open and have puff pastry) to get more. So compare, if you will, the ingredients list above with that of the $10 Dufour brand:
That’s more like it. Flour, butter and a few incidentals. It’s thawing now so I haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but I suspect it’ll be trickier to work with than the Pepperidge Farms but more worth the effort.
Pepperidge Farms, you should be ashamed of yourself. Passing this stuff off as puff pastry? Not cool.
