Despite his decades of well-regarded work, this is the first book I’ve read by Beagle. I’ve seen the movie, of course, but that’s about as close as I’ve come to his work. Therefore, I didn’t really know what to expect from this one.
Beagle tells a story that’s at the same time both familiar and unique, decorating it with charming details and witticisms. It was an easy read, but also a welcome one. Each evening I looked forward to reading more of the adventures of Robert the dragon exterminator and his companions.
It was a comfortable and enjoyable work. It won’t win any awards but doesn’t need to. It just needs to be what it is: a good story told well.
