1 minute read

Only five weeks after I read Mammoths, this book arrived on hold for me at my local library. Fantastic! And it makes three titles by Vo in a month. It’s been a long time since I consumed an author’s work in such a focused way. That speaks well to her skills.

It’s unsurprising that I enjoyed this latest entry in The Singing Hills Cycle. The rest of them rank high on my list of stories since I started really reading again a few years ago.

What is surprising is that this story didn’t flow as well for me as the others did. It felt like it had holes in it? Or made leaps and didn’t take me with it? I dunno, it just wasn’t as cohesive and well-told. Maybe Vo was pushing up against a deadline? Or maybe her editor was different? Not sure what happened there.

But overall, while I don’t feel it’s the strongest in the series, it’s still enjoyable. I read the entire thing in one sitting, so I’ll be able to get it back to the library for the next person in what’s sure to be a very long hold queue.
