less than 1 minute read

After reading Mammoths I decided it was time finally to read one of Vo’s novels. Siren Queen was in at the library, so that’s the one I went for.

I didn’t know what to expect, which is good because this book would’ve overturned any expectations. It was unlike anything I’d read before, and it was also brilliantly executed.

Her handling of magic in the book was especially good. Most books are like, “Magic! Magic happening here! Pay attention! Lookit!” As you can already guess, Vo didn’t do that. The magical things just were there and were unremarkable to the narrator, so therefore rightfully came off as unremarkable in the text. It was a refreshing take on it.

After this book and the entire Singing Hills Cycle, I’ll definitely be keeping Vo near the top of my list of “Must Read” authors.
