While wandering through my Whole Foods yesterday, feeling delightfully spoiled by the number of “Locally Grown!” signs hanging about the place, I came across a bin of apples.

Apples? At this time of year? Wait, those look like… They are! The Gravenstein apples are back in season again!

Oh, frabjous day!

Ain’t no apple on God’s green earth what can compare to a fresh Gravenstein, that’s what I say. Sweet, tart and crispy. Good in pies, apple sauce, salads or just as-is. I can’t get enough of them and look forward to the season with a spring in my step and a song in my heart.

Ahhh…Gravensteins. They help me find my happy place. I feel sorry for all you non-denizens of Sonoma County, unable to experience this apple. Being rare critters, Gravensteins never make the trek much beyond the immediate Bay Area. Either that or we’re hoarding them all for ourselves. That would be my choice.
