This is the second book of the Great Cities duology, the first being The City We Became which I finished a couple weeks ago.

I enjoyed this one as well, but it felt like a bit of a race to the end on the part of Jemisin. In the authors notes she explains why: this was originally planned as a trilogy, but the COVID epidemic took its emotional toll and she pared back those plans. I can’t fault her for that and think she did a good job with the story, all things considered.

Even though she tied off all the loose ends in the plot, it feels like Jemisin intentionally left the door open for future tales in this universe. I would welcome that, even in short story form. It would be great to learn more about these Cities, how they came to be, whether there are more in the universe outside of Earth, etc.
